Distributed in the North-east Atlantic from Southern Norway southwards to West Africa. Also present in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
Demersal gregarious species found at depths as low as 600 m. Inhabits coralligenous, rocky and sandy grounds. It feeds on crustaceans, worms and molluscs.
Landings mainly from fisheries using pelagic trawls.
