Distributed along the North-east Atlantic from Iceland and Norway to west of Africa. Also found in the Baltic, Black and Mediterranean Seas.
Mature adults migrate from European rivers and brackish waters to the Sargasso Sea (West Atlantic) for spawning. Juveniles then return to the same rivers. Its diet consists of invertebrates and fish.
Caught using a wide range of gears, including traps, fyke-nets, hooks, and spears.
