Found in the North-east Atlantic from the Barents Sea southwards to the western Iberian Peninsula. Also found around Iceland, Greenland and in the Baltic Sea.
Pelagic fish which gather in large shoals present in shallow waters all the way down to 200 m. It is a facultative planktivorous species feeding mainly on copepods.
Mainly caught using pelagic trawls, purse seines, and drift nets.
