DISTRIBUTION
Present in the East Atlantic from Iceland and Southern Norwegian Sea to West Africa. Also present in the Mediterranean Sea.
ECOLOGY
Pelagic slender schooling species usually found on continental shelves down to over 200 m in depth. Their diet consists of crustaceans, cephalopods and small fish.
FISHERIES
Mainly caught by fisheries using pelagic trawls, purse seine, hooks and lines.

Its common name comes from the legend that other small fish species ride on its back over great distances.
