Present along the North-east Atlantic from the North Sea down to West Africa, including the off-lying islands. Found also in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
These species inhabit sandy, muddy and gravel bottoms present at depths ranging from 1 – 500 m. Their diet consists of crustaceans, molluscs and benthic fish.
Mainly fished using gill nets, trammel nets and bottoms trawls.
